چکیده

Short latency evoked potentials in response to acoustic stimulation can be recorded from the thalamus and the subthalamus during stereotactic surgery for relief of intractable pain or tremor. The wave shape, polarity, amplitude and latencies of such responses do not change in wave I-V (wave VI and VII are exceptions) with different electrode positions from the cortical surface to the subthalamic area. Wave I-V may be generated at the midbrain stem, but wave VI-VII must be generated at the thalmic level. The amplitude of the potentials recorded at the thalamus and the subthalamic area, on the other hand, is enhanced after producing a lesion at the recording site. The results also indicate that short latency evoked potentials to clicks recorded from electrodes in the thalamus and the subthalamic area, or from an electrode at vertex, are volume-conducted far field potentials emanating from the brain stem.

The effect of bilateral subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on the acoustic and prosodic features in patients with Parkinson’s disease: A study protocol for the first trial on Iranian patients

Background: The effect of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on the voice features in Parkinson’s disease (PD) is controversial. No study has evaluated the voice features of PD underwent STN-DBS by the acoustic, perceptual, and patient-based assessments comprehensively. Furthermore, there is no study to investigate prosodic features before and after DBS in PD. The curren...

Very fast oscillations evoked by median nerve stimulation in the human thalamus and subthalamic nucleus.

Very fast oscillations (VFOs; 500-1,500 Hz) are associated with sensory-evoked potentials (SEPs), but their origin is unknown. To characterize the origins of VFOs, we studied 35 patients with deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes [15 with thalamic and 20 with the subthalamic nucleus (STN) electrodes]. We recorded median nerve stimulation-evoked SEPs from the thalamus and STN with microelectro...

Cortical Potentials Evoked by Deep Brain Stimulation in the Subthalamic Area

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) has been used since the mid-1990s as a treatment for patients with Parkinson's disease, and more recently also in other conditions, such as dystonia or obsessive compulsive disorder. Non-invasive studies of cortical evoked potentials (EPs) that follow individual STN-DBS stimuli has provided us with insights about the conduction of th...

A new model of brainstem ischemia in dogs.

A new model of brainstem ischemia in dogs is described. The perforating arteries arising from the posterior cerebral arteries as far as the bilateral junctions with the posterior communicating arteries were occluded using a subtemporal approach to the region of the interpeduncular cistern. Infarction of the posterior thalamus, subthalamus, midbrain, and upper pons was consistently produced. The...
